Medical Application of Akrosorb Soda Lime
Akrosorb Medical grade Soda Lime is produced as per pharmacopoeia (IP/BP/USP) standards.
Akron Healthcare has the necessary licenses including Schedule-M, GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices), ISO 9001:2008 and approvals that include I.P. (Indian Pharmacopoeia), B.P. (British Pharmacopoeia) & U.S.P. (United States Pharmacopoeia) to manufacture Medical Grade Soda Lime.
Akrosorb Medical grade Soda Lime is a carefully controlled mixture of Calcium and Sodium Hydroxides, in the form of irregularly sized particles. High Carbon Dioxide absorption capacity of Medical Grade Soda Lime is due to its particle shape giving a higher surface to volume ratio compared with other soda lime brands available in the market.
Different types of Granule Shape Profile depending on the intended application of Soda Lime manufactured by Akron Healthcare include irregular pebble shape, pellet shape, cylindrical shape, d-shape, uniform regular shape etc.
Use in Hospitals:
- Akrosorb Soda Lime is used to absorb expired CO2 during Anesthesia (in Operation Theatres).
- Akrosorb Soda Lime is a Carbon Dioxide absorbent of choice for major hospitals in India & across the world.
- The major applications of Soda Lime are in breathable gas applications where Carbon Dioxide levels need to be controlled, for example in medical anesthetic breathing circuits. In these applications, the breathable air is recirculated for re-use and therefore any exhaled carbon dioxide needs to be removed in order to prevent a build-up of carbon dioxide to toxic levels.
- Akrosorb Soda Lime has application in Anesthetic systems in the medical operations to remove expelled Carbon dioxide due to respiration carried out by the patient or the user.
Color Indicator:
Akrosorb Soda Lime is available in 2 types:
With Indicator:
As the Soda Lime becomes less effective during use, the granules change their color.
Color Indicator is available in 2 types:
Pink to White Indicator on absorption of CO2
White to violet Indicator on absorption of CO2
This color change should not be used to determine when to replace your absorbent, but simply as an indication of recent use.
Without Indicator:
Akron Healthcare also manufactures Akrosorb Soda Lime (without indicator) i.e. white color granules that do not change in color on CO2 Absorption.
Medical Application:
Akrosorb (Soda Lime) is used in medical applications for removal of carbon dioxide from breathable gas in anesthesia circuits and in hyperbaric oxygen treatment chambers. Akron Healthcare manufactures Soda lime for many of the world's leading medical equipment manufacturers and leading hospitals as per their customized specifications to suit their needs.
Shape:
The granule shape of Akrosorb Soda Lime ensures maximum CO2 penetration into the particles, by minimizing the distance to the centre of the particle, thereby increasing the CO2 capacity of the product. It absorbs carbon dioxide in oxygen based therapy based metabolism, in closed circuit anesthesia, in estimation respirators, breathing apparatus etc. Exhaled gases are circled back to the canister where CO2 absorption takes place and water and heat are produced. The warmed and humidified gas joins the fresh gas flow to be delivered to the patient. In Akrosorb Soda Lime absorption, the Carbon Dioxide first reacts with water to form carbonic acid, which then reacts with sodium hydroxide to form a soluble carbonate. The soluble sodium carbonate then reacts with calcium hydroxide to form an insoluble carbonate and replenishes sodium hydroxide. Exhaustion of its activity is indicated by the dye and accordingly the color changes from pink to white or white to violet depending on the indicator used due to absorption of Carbon Dioxide (CO2).
Akrosorb Soda Lime granules are available in various shapes that include irregular pebble shaped granules, uniform shaped granules, cylindrical shaped granules, d-shaped granules and pellet shaped granules depending on the intended application and customer specification.
The water content can also be varied depending on the application.
The point to be ensured is that the shape of the granules should maximize CO2 absorption and minimize dust formation.
Size:
Which mesh size to use for Medical Purposes:
Akrosorb Soda Lime is manufactured as per Pharmacopoeia Standards (IP/BP/USP). As per the Pharmacopoeia Standards, the appropriate mesh size is 4-8 mesh. We even manufacture Soda Lime in 8-12 mesh size.
Medical Grade Akrosorb Soda Lime is presently available in different Granule Sizes or Size Range that include:
- 1.4-2.0 mm
- 2.0-2.8 mm
- 2.0 – 4.0 mm
- 2.0-8.0 mm
- 2.5-5.0 mm
- 2.8-4.75 mm
- 2.8-5.5 mm
- 4.0-8.0 mm
We can modify the mesh size, granule shape & size range depending on the intended application and/or as per customer specification.
Quality:
We follow strict control, and batch acceptance criteria. Our Soda Lime test methods also conform to Pharmacopoeia Standards like I.P., B.P., U.S.P. or IS 5321:1969.
